To cope with the many challenges in learning, both in the national and international scenes, the Philippine educational system has to institute changes.
Active learning encourages teachers and students to think more creatively and employs technology in enhancing the learning experience. To help in this effort, the Integrated Government Philippines (iGovPhil) Project developed Gabay Aral.
Gabay Aral is an online learning management system (LMS) that enables educators to collaborate, create, and distribute online courses. It is based on Moodle, an open-sourced system specifically designed for the educators to create personalized learning environments. Gabay Aral is a step closer to the establishment of a blended learning – a combination of online and traditional classroom methods of instruction.
This system has been adopted by 40 learning institutions and is being implemented by 245 active users from various state universities and colleges.
As an application, Gabay Aral offers the following services:
- Course Management
- File Sharing
- Student enrolment
- Collaboration tools
- Student submissions
- Performance Tracking
Gabay Aral also offers collaborative tools, such as wiki and forums, to make online learning more interactive and effective.
Advantages of the Gabay Aral
For educators, Gabay Aral allows the conduct of online lectures and other classroom activities. It can also be a platform for monitoring student’s academic standing.
For students, Gabay Aral is convenient for submission of requirements. They don’t need to print out papers or write essays by hand because the system supports paperless, electronic submissions. Students can also use the system to connect with instructors and classmates anytime and anywhere.
For schools and universities, blended learning as perceived through Gabay Aral can be a strategy to save on resources needed to build classrooms and related facilities.
